Tool Rooms/Tool Design Institutes
Tool Room is the heart of Engineering
Industry. SIDO has set up 10 Tool Rooms in the country to assist SSI units
in their technical upgradation by providing good quality toolings to meet
the growing needs and to assist SSI units with the assistance of countries
such as Denmark & Federal Republic of Germany which have provided the
sophisticated machines with latest technology. Some of the Tool Rooms have
also been set up with the assistance of UNIDO/ILO.
More Details
Tool Rooms serve the industries in
areas indicated below:-
a) Tool Design and Production
-
Design and Manufacture of dies and tools,
mould, jigs and fixtures, gauges and tool components etc. (upto 1 micron
accuracy).

Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided
Manufacturing (CAD/CAM).

Heat Treatment of all types of steels.

Quality Control and Testing.
b) Training and Consultancy
Industry based long term training
for tool & die makers.
Short term training for managers
& supervisors to upgrade their knowledge and skill.
Need based technical training for
skilled workers/ tool makers/machinists etc.
Training in CNC technology, inspection,
quality control testing etc.
Besides, a proposal for setting up
a Tool Room at Guwahati in the North-Eastern Region is under process. Activities
of monitoring and implementing of a scheme for setting up of CAD/CAM Centres
at Chennai to assist small scale industries, are also under process.
Product-cum-Process Development Centres
- PPDCs
Six centers are in existence. They are at Firozabad for glass industry, Kannuauj for essential oils, Meerut for sports goods,, Agra for foundry and Ramnagar for Electronic industries and Mumbai for Electrical Measuring Instruments.
Sitarc Pump Institute is another
PPDC, a non-Government organisation, which has been set up at Coimbatore
with assistance from UNDP, Govt. of India and Govt. of Tamil Nadu. The
function of the Institute is to upgrade the technology of water pumps manufactured
by small scale units. The Institute is to prepare prototypes of efficient
water pumps and motors, which will help in energy conservation .
State Governments are also running
some PPDCs.
